Class 10 Chapter 1 Introduction to styles notes
1. Ways of creating an attractive digital documentation :
There are two ways of creating an attractive digital document.
i. By manually formatting a document.
ii. By applying Styles
2. Advantages of manually formatting a document :
i. It is easy to use
ii. It requires less knowledge.
3. Disadvantages of manually formatting a document :
i. Creating a large document with consistent formatting becomes difficult and troublesome.
ii. It is a time consuming task.
4. Styles – Definition :
A Style is a collection of various formatting information, which we save and apply on a document.
Example : We can create a style with the name ‘heading style’ for giving heading of a document. For that, we can select
Font size -18
Name – Amiri
Weight -bold
Alignment – center
And store these formatting information as a style with the name ‘heading style’. Now we can apply this ‘heading style’ to any heading of a document.
• In this chapter, later on, You will learn how to create the style.
Advantages/benefits of using style in a document
i. It enables us to apply consistent formatting in a document.
ii. It helps to save our time and effort in formatting a document.
iii. It is less troublesome as compared to manual formatting.
Style categories :
There are six categories styles available in LibreOffice Writer –
i. Character style
ii. Paragraph style
iii. Page Style
iv. Frame style
v. List style
vi. Table style
i. Character Style : This style is used to apply on a block of letters or words in a document. Character style is used to change the appearance of a part of a sentence or a paragraph without affecting the other part. We can include formatting information such as font size, font color, font style, text effects etc.
ii. Paragraph Style : Paragraph style is used to apply on a paragraph. Under paragraph style, we can include font tab stops, text alignment, line spacing, section border etc. It also includes formatting information of Character style such as font size, font color, font style, text effects etc.
iii. Page Style : Page style is used to format pages of a document. Under page style, we can apply various page layout information such as page size, margin, header and footer placement, border, background etc. we can create one or many page style for a document. For a document, if no page style is defined or applied, LibreOffice Writer uses its built in default page style.
iv. Frame Style : Frames allow us to organize our document in sections so that we can apply different formatting to each section. It is like a container which can hold text, graphics and lists.
v. List Style : List style is used to format a list by applying a specific numbering format such as number or bullets to the list.
vi. Table Style : Using Table style, we can format a table by adding borders, different texts style, text colours, border colours, aligning text inside the table etc.
Different methods to access predefined styles in LibreOffice Writer :
i. Using Style option from Menu Bar
ii. Using Style Drop Down list box from the Formatting toolbar
iii. Selecting Styles from Side bar Menu
iv. Using Keyboard shortcut i.e. F11 Function key.
How to apply in-built style to a document
OR
Steps to apply built-in styles to a document
i. Select the text to be formatted. The selected text may be a collection of characters, words, lines, paragraphs, page, frame, list or table.
ii. To apply style on the selected text, click the category of style (character, page, paragraph, frame, list, table) then double click on the suitable style option under that category of style from the menu bar or side bar or formatting toolbar.

Fill Format
Fill Format is a convenient way of applying same style to words present at different locations in a document. Fill Format can be used to style scattered pages, frames, tables, lists, paragraphs or characters.
Steps to apply Fill Format
i. Open the document to be styled.
ii. Open the Style window. Select the desired style from drop down list under desired style category.
iii. Click Fill Format button.
iv. To apply the selected style, take the mouse pointer to desired location and click.
*** To quit Fill Format, click the Fill Format button again or press Esc key.
Creating a new style or custom style
There are two ways to create a new style or a custom style –
i. Using Selection method
ii. Using Drag and Drop method
Creating a new Style using Selection method
i. Select the portion of document, such as page, paragraph, character to format as per your requirement.
ii. From the Style menu, choose the category of style (character, paragraph, page etc.) for which a new style is to be created.
iii. Click Style action button in the Style menu. A list with various options will be displayed. Click on ‘New Style from Selection’ option.
iv. In ‘Create Style’ dialog box, type the name of new style.
v. Click OK to save the newly created style.
Creating a new Style using Drag and Drop method
i. Select the desired style category from Style menu.
ii. Select the text from a document and change its formatting as per your requirement.
iii. Drag the selected text to the Style menu.
iv. Create Style dialog box will appear. Type down the name of the new style.
v. And then click OK. A new Style will be created.
Updating an existing Style
i. Select the word, paragraph or page whose formatting is to be modified.
ii. Format the selected portion as per your requirement.
iii. Click on ‘Update Selected Style’ option under Styles Action Button of Style menu.
Loading a Style from a template or a document
‘Load styles from template’ is the last option in Style Action button of Style menu. It is used to copy style from a template or a file. Once copied, the styles will be displayed in the list of styles in the existing file.
Steps to load style from a Template
Steps to load style from a Template or a file
i. Click on ‘Load styles from template’ option under Style Action button of Style menu.
ii. If a style is to be copied from a template then in the ‘Load styles from Template’ dialog box, under categories tab, select the category where the template having the style is created.
iii. else click on ‘From File’ button.
iv. The open dialog box will appear. Select the file having styles and click on Open button. The styles will be loaded or copied in the existing document.

vii. Drag and Drop method can not be used to create a Page Style.
viii. An inbuilt style or a custom style can be updated at any time.
ix. Styles can be copied from a template or a file into an existing file.
